Michael Vetters Guide

A true local guide Michael was born and raised and still living in Gore, the Southland town known as the brown trout capital of the world". Much of his fishing knowledge was passed down through the generations, with both his father and grandfather being experienced fishermen.

Michael received his first rod for Christmas when he was just 8 years old. With the help of his grandfather he started to tie flies and use a fly rod at the age of 11. Ever since that first rod, he has been hooked.

He has spent many hours fishing the local the rivers within three hours of Gore. The more than 35+ years fishing these waters has resulted in Michael's very considerable knowledge and intimate understanding of the area that few others can offer.

Fishing waters

Remote fishing

Michael's personal favourites include the:

Oreti River

Mataura River

Pomahaka River

Waikaia River

There are many other waters that he knows well and so will plan and take you on an angling adventure suited to your skill level and the conditions on the day.

Fishing options

Fishing options include:

  • Day or overnight trips
  • Fishing the Mataura River
Matching the hatch on the famous Mataura River can be challenging to say the least, and for this you can't beat the knowledge of a true local guide. The selective feeding wild brown trout rise readily to the day time mayfly, midge and evening caddis hatches. However, the Mataura river, although sometimes frustrating, can offer a most enjoyable days fishing and Michael will show you how to leave with a smile on your face.

Hook up on the Mataura

  • Fishing backcountry rivers
Sight fishing for wild rainbow and brown trout in the gin clear backcountry rivers can be an exhilarating experience during summer. Spring creeks offer even more of a challenge with accurate casting and very long leaders required.
Small creek

Client feedback

"Thanks to Fly Fish the South for a great day on the Mataura. My guide Michael took me to his secret spots and put me on to some big browns. He's the master of spotting trout in the shallows and directing your casts right on top of them. Thanks again for a great trip! See you next time I make it down from Nashville, the Country Music Capital of the World, to Gore, the Country Music Capital of the South Island!"

"Having never fly fished any New Zealand waters before, and certainly nothing that compared with the rivers of the South Island, Marie and I found Michael's guidance and assistance invaluable. He is a personable young bloke with an intimate knowledge of the Southland area around Gore. He was able to put us onto fish where we would have otherwise not been successful, he was continually focused on ensuring that we got the best out of our fishing time.

He was more than willing to give us advice on stream craft, flies and methods that would assist us during our holiday. Given the opportunity we would be more than happy to fish with Michael again."

Release

"Michael, Many thanks for introducing me to the Mataura River on what was my first visit to NZ. Your knowledge of the water and where to fish under the days conditions were a definite advantage and I'd be keen to hook up with you again when I'm next in the South Island.

Your hints and tips on tactics and your fish spotting ability allowed me to hook some good fish and made for an enjoyable and rewarding day - I must admit I was surprised to see you get the vice out on the bank at one stage to tie a fly to try to out smart the rainbow we saw in that first stretch that was refusing all previous offerings - this showed the mark of a very dedicated and helpful guide."
