Fish type, number and
size |
Both
rainbow and brown trout are present with the numbers in the
stream increasing dramatically during the winter months when
large fish enter the stream to spawn. During the spawning runs
the river holds many very large fish. |
Situation |
The Waiteti Stream rises in
the hills to the west of Rotorua and flows east to enter Lake
Rotorua in the township of Ngongotaha. It is a very picturesque
river and provides excellent fishing throughout the year especially
downstream from the Ngongotaha Road Bridge. All the tributaries
of the Waiteti stream are closed waters. When a stealthy approach
is applied, fish can be easily spotted, often in good numbers
lying deep in the pools. There can be excellent fishing at the
mouth of the Waiteti stream where fish will often move into
the cool water from the stream as the lake warms up. |

Description |
The Waiteti stream is small
but provides one of the few spawning waters for fish from both
Lake Rotorua and Lake Rotoiti. Although small it is surprisingly
deep in places and the banks are overgrown with vegetation in
many places making access difficult in some stretches. |
Access |
There is good access along the
Rotorua District Council reserves which follow the true right
hand bank of the stream. Above the Ngongotaha Road Bridge public
access is limited as the river flows through private property. |
Recommended tackle |
Lightweight fly rods (in weights
four to six) are ideal and a light leader is recommended. |
Recommended lures |
Nymphs:
Small lightly weighted or unweighted nymphs such as a roughly
tied Hare
and Copper or egg patterns such as Globugs
work well especially in the cooler months.
Dry flies:
During the summer try cicada
patterns or beetle
patterns though this is not a noted dry fly water
Wet flies:
Woolly Buggers,
Mrs Simpson,
Hamill's
Killer patterns and Red
Setter during the day. Darker patterns such as a Fuzzy
Wuzzy or Craig's
Night-time at night, especially at the mouth of the stream.
