Guided fishing options

Cover shot on Fly Fisherman
(Feb. 2004)

Scott Murray, better known as “The Trout” has become famous in his own right as a renowned fishing guide. He led one of New Zealand’s most brilliant teams of fishing guides for over 10 years and now leads his own team at River Haven Lodge. With over forty years of fishing behind him, and eighteen of those as a guide around the top of the South Island, his experience and knowledge are beyond measure.
About your guide

Scott's total focus is to provide you with a positive angling experience.

Scott has fished in Russia and Tasmania, as well as Colorado, Montana, Oklahoma, Arkansas and Idaho in the United States, giving him a diverse knowledge of various fisheries. The Trout has been featured on two ESPN shows across the USA, Fly Fisherman and Rod & Reel (April ’06). He has fished with several celebrity anglers such as Michael Keaton of Batman and Gary Anderson, the top scoring goal kicker for NFL in America.

Scott is experienced in sighting brown trout, as though he had a type of radar connection with the fish themselves! Tying his own flies to match the exact insect stage gives you more of an edge. This is where Scott comes in and his 80% return client base speaks for itself.

Fishing options

From fishing outside your cabin door to remote back country wilderness fishing, Scott can put you onto the fishing to suit your fitness and skill levels..

Some stream beds and banks are rocky and can be physically demanding, requiring longer hikes and some manoeuvring over heavy boulders (especially with heli fishing). There are other areas that are very easy to walk and offer great fishing. Be sure to let Scott know how much walking you would like to do.

Heli Fishing Few others know the back rivers that you can access by helicopter than Scott. He tends to guide the helicopter pilot to those “special places” he has scouted out over the years to give his clients an unforgettable day on the river.

"Scott and Leya are excellent hosts, in a wonderfully maintained and quality built world class fishing lodge. My son Zack and I took a week and stayed at River Haven. We were limited by my son's short time away, so our experience although excellent, was too short. Take time to be with River Haven more than a week. You'll be glad you did..." Bruce Fox, Hamner, Idaho, USA

"I have now fished with Scotty on 8 trips and can only say that he really is the best guide I have ever fished with. The quality of the fishing is out of this world, the food is excellent and the accommodation top notch..."

Ruhan Neethling, South Africa
