Just a minute's walk from the Parade Pool on the world famous Tauranga Taupo river, Kereru Lodge provides self-contained cabins style accommodation in a wilderness environment.

Being down a private road anglers are able to stay at and fish the upper section of the river with only wood pigeons (or Kereru) and other native birds for company. As well there are a number of other top waters to fish within a short drive.

Adventure Taupo Guiding

Steve is also a superb fishing (and hunting) guide and will take you onto some of the most iconic waters of the Central North Island. Although living on one of New Zealand's great rivers, the Tauranga Taupo (or often referred to as the TT) Steve also knows and can take you to some very remote and isolated waters that seldom see anglers.

Guiding options include:

  • Wilderness Fishing for wily rainbow and brown trout in the very remote back country rivers of the Central North Island.
  • Raft Fishing where the raft is used as a mode of transport to the best pools on remote rivers. (These trips are highly recommended to be multi-day where you will camp in a beautiful area and experience the best of fishing throughout the whole day and into the evening)
  • Heli-fishing where you can be transported quickly to remote water where you can stalk and cast to trophy brown and rainbow trout that have seldom seen a fly
  • Winter fishing from May 1 to September 30 when most rivers around the country are closed and fishing is on the lower reaches of the big rivers and tributaries of Lake Taupo as huge numbers of large trout surge up the rivers on their spawning runs.

Waders and all equipment can be supplied though you are welcome to bring your favourite rods and reels if you wish.

Local attractions and activities
  • Hunting (ask Steve about the hunting in the area as he is a well known hunter and hunting guide)
  • Bush walks and tramping

Testimonials My wife and I enjoyed immensely our 5 days of fly fishing on the North Island of New Zealand. We have enjoyed fly fishing all over the world and Steve was a great contributor into our successful outing. The rivers are beautiful, the fish where large and exciting to catch, and all of New Zealand should be proud of their magnificent fishery.

We have been fortunate enough to get to know Steve Yerex on two occasions. The first simply a guiding experience when he was instrumental in initiating two of my four sons into the wonderful world of fishing for trout on the fly. Their success on that day has made them fly fishers for life and no small part of the credit for this must go to Steve for his patient understanding and assistance. The second occasion was when my wife and whole family of four boys stayed at Kereru lodge for 4 days. The peace, tranquility and quiet of the place was remarkable and thoroughly relaxing.
