Raft fishing

The lodge runs their own rafts that can take you through stunning scenerey to fish remote pools where the fish have seldom seen a fly allowing you to combine adventure with your fishing experience. In this way the lodge guides can put you onto some of the best back country nymph and dry fly fishing for sighted browns and rainbows.

Boat fishing on Lake Taupo

Lake Taupo is a short distance away and offers some of the best fishing to be found anywhere. Whether it be trolling or harling or using the boat to get to a remote sheltered bay to cast to trout that are chasing small bait fish into the shallows, the opportunities are endless.

A helicopter access options offers anglers the opportunity to access truly remarkable fishing in remote wilderness areas where you will not see another angler.

Summer fishing (1 April - 30 October)

This is a fabulous time to visit and fish at Tongariro Lodge. In an average season 40-50,000-plus adult rainbow and brown trout migrate up the Tongariro River alone. The Lake Taupo fishery is  one of the only areas in New Zealand that remains open to fly fisherman all year. The lower sections of the tributary rivers and streams provide access to Taupo's large run of wild winter steelhead. With five of these tributaries within a twenty minute drive of Tongariro Lodge you can understand what a great winter fishing destination it is.

Winter fishing (1 Nov - 30 March) The summer season sees all the waters in the region open and is the time to fish the Tongarriro or the many lakes and backcountry streams and rivers in the area. Huge rainbow and brown trout can be targetted using a dry fly or nymph in the clear waters and provide a great opportunity to catch a trophy fish.
About your guides To make the most of the time you have in this fishing paradise we recommend that you make use of one of the resident guides each of whom have an average of over 20 years guiding experience. Through the knowledge they have bult up of the area, they can take you to many rivers that run through private land and are generally unaccessible. And every year the guides in their leisure time get out and explore more 'waters' for the lodge guests to enjoy.
