King Tide Salt Fly is based in Tauranga, Bay of Plenty and specialises in salt water fly fishing targeting the many exciting sports fish in this region.

Your guide, Lucas Allen is a fanatical angler who is keen to share his expertise and assist you to hook into a mind-numbingly powerful kingfish, kahawai, snapper or tuna using only a fly rod. The phenomenon of large kingfish patrolling the backs of stingrays in shallow water is up there with the best fly fishing experiences New Zealand has to offer. Once you have tried this form of fishing you will see why it is one of the fastest growing trends in angling at present.

King Tide is a 14 foot aluminium boat which provides a safe, stable and clear casting platform. Using an electric motor it can quietly stalk fish in the shallow waters. We operate under the MOSS format implemented by Maritime New Zealand and are regularly audited to ensure clients safety and well-being.

About your guide

Since his earliest years Lucas has been a fly fishing fanatic, with salt water fly fishing being his main focus now days. He is one of New Zealand's leaders in this fast growing sport and is keen to share his experience with others.

Lucas is a keen conservationist and tags most of the kingfish he catches and works with marine researchers to help gain more knowledge about the fish and its habitat. His easy going nature and adaptability will ensure you have an unforgettable day wether you are a novice or expert.

Target species

The area Lucas fishes is a rich fishery in terms of variety and fish numbers. In particular are the targeted sports fish such as:

  • Kingfish; Surely one of the world's smartest and hharest fighting species pound for pound
  • Kahawai: Generally smaller fish than Kingfish but a very hard fighting fish and often underrated adversary
  • Snapper: One of the county's great table fish that readily takes lures
  • Skipjack Tuna: Another very hard fighting fish
  • Trout: As well as the saltwater species, Lucas can also take you out for some great Central North Island freshwater fishing.
Season The typical season to rarget saltwater species is from November to June.


The 14 foot King Tide

Clients are provided with high quality gear suitable to stand up to the rigours of this demanding environment. These fish and the salt environment test gear to its limits day in, day out and need to be up to the task.

All equipment is provided for the day but if you want to bring your own please consult prior to departure.



From a few hours to multi day, destination and freshwater trips can be arranged upon request.

As well as a day or more on the saltwater, Lucas can tailor a package to keep you on your toes and sample some of the very best fly fishing locations the central/upper North Island has on offer.
