Salt Water Fly Fish

Fly Casting

Matt is a salt water fly fishing guide and charter skipper with a 6m (20ft) boat that has been custom designed for this operation. It is super quiet and comfortable.

Anglers take turns on the forward casting platform to spot fish and cast to structure for snapper, kingfish and kahawai. Matt specialises in ‘mooching’ the coast line following the tides and fish.

Experts and beginners welcome. Matt’s tuition, ability to find fish and sense of humour ensure a great day on the water.

Your guide

Matt is located on beautiful Waiheke Island in Auckland's Hauraki Gulf. While most trips leave from the island, pickups can be arranged from the mainland including Auckland.

About your guide

Matt is saltwater obsessed and has spent 30 years of saltwater lure fishing which he really loves sharing with others.

New Zealand's saltwater fly fishing is a relatively new sport and Matt's experience and knowledge puts him at the forefront of this growing sport.

Target species

Snapper, kingfish, trevally and kahawai are the main targets, however there are multiple other fish we encounter and can be targeted on fly.

New Zealand is known for very large kingfish and our snapper (Pagrus auratus) can be found in very shallow water within the city and every conceivable habitat around our shores. The summer months provide an influx of tropical gamefish from small tuna to world record marlin.

Gear All tackle including flies are supplied and all is of the highest quality with premium sage rods, rio lines and custom flies
Refreshements Refreshements including lunch and snacks are provided. Please let Matt know of any special requirements.

Half day (4 hrs): $600 for up to 2 anglers

Custom trips can also be designed to meet your needs.
