North Canterbury: Where to fish
The North Canterbury region is bounded on one side by the high Southern Alps and the other by the Pacific Ocean. As well as numerous lakes there are many small streams though the dominant feature are the large braided rivers that rise in the mountains and then cross the Canterbury Plains to the sea. This rivers along with others in the neighbouring Central South Island region, are the principle salmon fisheries in New Zealand.
Best salmon fishing The Rakaia River is one of the best salmon fisheries in New Zealand and the upper reaches are set amidst spectacular scenery. Lake Coleridge is a large, exposed high country lake that is heavily fished for its landlocked Chinook salmon. Sea run salmon fisheries All the major rivers including the Waimakariri, Rakaia, Waiau and the Hurunui are popular for their seasonal sea run salmon. Most productive trout fisheries The Hurunui River and the Waiau River have some of the most productive rivers for trout fishing in New Zealand. Most scenic settings With the backdrop of high snow covered mountains and bubbling crystal clear streams it is hard to single out any particular area of this beautiful region as being the most scenic. The Waiau River and the Hurunui River (including its North and South Branches) offer relaxed fishing in stunning North Canterbury scenery. High country lake fishing The Canterbury high country lakes provide fishing in a remote and uniquely scenic environment. Hurunui high country lakes |
