Travelling south from Auckland, turn off SH1 onto SH2. Then take a series of left turns, first into Mangatangi Road, then Kaiaua Road and finally Workman Road. See Mangatangi reservoir access map. |
Methods |
Fly fishing using a nymph is generally most productive. retrieve the nymph slowly, giving it just an occasional twitch. As the water can be deep in the areas open to anglers long leaders are essential |
Recommended tackle |
A long mono-filament leader, 3-5 m long, with a floating fly line. When nymph fishing try to get the flies down so a longer leader may be needed. |
Recommended lures |
Dry flies: During the days there can be mayfly hatches so flies such as Adams are useful to have on hand. In early to mid summer there are also good caddis (sedge) hatches in the late evening.
Nymphs: Pheasant tail and other similar patterns.
Wet flies: Woolly Buggers in green and black; small wet flies such as spiders retrieved slowly in the evenings.
Spinners: Small bladed spinners such as Veltic or Mepps. During the summer soft baits are good alternatives.
