Lake Wiritoa

Lake Wiritoa provides easy fishing for a good population of stocked rainbow trout. The lake is often used for a Take a Kid Fishing day.

Situation Lake Wiritoa is a small lake on the coast approximately 8 kilometres south of Wanganui.

Description Lake Wiritoa is a small clear lake that is popular for a variety of water sports. As motorboats are also allowed on the lake, it is best to during the cooler months or early in the morning or evening.
Access Lake Wirotoa is approximately 3 km south of Wanganui on State Highway 3. There is a turnoff from SH3 to the lake.
Methods The most popular and productive method is spinning. Provided there are not a lot of other activities on the lake, nymph and harling can also be productive.
Recommended tackle Spinning rods capable of casting 7 gram lure are the most popular.
Recommended lures

Dry flies: During the summer try cicada, cricket and beetle patterns (though this is not known as a good dry fly venue).

Nymphs: Green damsel fly and stonefly nymphs.

Wet flies: When harling try bully patterns such as a Mrs Simpson or Hamill's Killer.

Spinners: Small black and gold Tobys or red and gold Veltic spinners
