HomeWellingtonWellington: Where to fishDudding’s Lake

Dudding's Lake

Duddings Lake is a small very picturesque water that holds reasonable numbers of trout and perch. With its wide open spaces it is ideal for teaching kids to fish though the water can get choked with aquatic weed in the warmer weather. There is a walkway round the lake (about 2 km) and all sections of this small water are easily accessed. Not suitable for wading.

Fish type Rainbow trout and perch
Situation Located between Bulls and Whanganui on a small well sign-posted side road.

Description

This relatively clear water lake holds a good population of perch (which can spawn in the lake) and trout introduced annually by the local Fish and Game. Weed can be a problem in the lake and it is best to search for water with a reasonably clear margin around the shoreline. The fish have a rich food source.

During the warmer months anglers will share the lake with other users including water-skiers and swimming. Therefore it is best fished in the cooler months.

The lake has plenty of open spaces for back casts and is a good venue for kids to learn to fish as all methods are legal.

Access

Access is via a side road that leads off State Highway 3

Methods All methods are legal and for kids it is a good bait fishing venue.
Recommended tackle Due to the weed that is often present, floating lines are recommended. When spinning try a relatively fast retrieve to avoid the weed beds.
Recommended lures

Nymphs: Caddis patterns, Pheasant Tail and Prince Nymph patterns. Usually smaller sizes (14 – 18) and  unweighted is best.

Dry flies: Caddis fly patterns and large Mayfly patterns throughout the season with beetle patterns around November and cicada patterns and crickets in the summer months.

Wet flies: Small spider patterns just subsurface.

Spinners: Small bladed spinners with red being a good colour.
